When I was young, do-it-yourself shops were unheard of in my place. My father hired other people to do major home renovations. This can be quite expensive. Do-it-yourself shops changed the way things are being done; even a plain housewife can sometimes easily install fixtures even without the help of a man.

I do DIY in my home every now and then and it is some kind of a good workout for me at the same time. It makes small “magical” changes to the look of my home in little ways. DIY also saves me a great deal of money.
